The '10' List 9

10 Verbal Photographs
1. I had a dream that I was walking along the water and a fish jumped out at me, squealing with a horrible ringing yell. I asked it, “Why are you making such a horrific racket?” and in return it replied, “The water was too cold.”
2. I always thought that animals speak to each other like humans do. It is similar to the idea of anthropomorphic creatures seeing the same way that we do, when we talk they have to adapt to our language, but if we barked correctly they could understand us.
3. There is a painting that I saw with a circle of influential people in the world, such as Vincent Van Gogh and Ernest Hemingway, sitting around playing cards. I envisioned myself experiencing the same kind of event. I realized most would be musicians or writers, containing a significantly large circle spanning wider than just four people.
4. F. Scott Fitzgerald once said that action is character. I envisioned this in contribution to my everyday life and decided that it would be amazing if I could talk to him just at least once a day to get advice from him through my day.
5. The Detroit Medical Center was just sold to a company of private investors named Vanguard. Vanguard sounds like a cheesy, fake company that may just take all of DMC’s money and then sell it for cheap.
6. I imagined, while I was driving down the freeway, what it would be like if there was a freeway that spanned 8 lanes. Would traffic still backup?
7. Imagine a world where there was only air to walk on. I watched Apollo 13 and watched the astronauts float in the ship because of no gravity. It would be astonishing if there were no ground and people just walked on air.
8. I think it would be amazing if there was a type of speaker that color coded sound waves when certain types of music was playing. This is not involving the used of illegal drugs either.
9. I was walking down my street on the way to get a haircut, a long time ago. I just remember this vision being fascinating. The sun was shining through the leaves creating somewhat of a thin green glow that formed fascinating patterns in the sidewalk, like little night-light images during the day.
10. People who jump off bridges always tend to die on contact. Do you think it is like hitting concrete and your body would crush into little pieces?

10 Treasures
1. “Music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the soul” -Plato
2. “Music is love in search of a word.” -Sidonie Gabrielle
3. “The woods would be very silent if the only birds that sang were those who sang best...” -Henry David Thoreau
4. “Music is a defining element of character.” -Plato
5. “One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” -Bob Marley
6. “I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music.” -Billy Joel
7. “Music must never offend the ear, but must please the listener, or, in other words, must never cease to be music.” -Mozart
8. “I bid you sing of Gongyla, Abanthis, taking up your lyre as (now again) longing floats around you.” -Sappho
9. “Yes you a child once, come sing these things, talk to us, give us your grace.” -Sappho
10. “I don’t know what to do, two states of mind in me” -Sappho

The theme of my ten verbal photographs is a little different than they usually are. I had a pretty unique imagination this week because of my heavy workload; well that’s what I assume. When I have a heavy workload, I tend to imagine things and situations a little more than usual. The situations are usually completely unrealistic, but they could be useful in my writing, if I ever write an acceptable fictional story. I imagined that there is no gravity, which is entirely unrealistic, but it could make for an interesting characteristic in a story, or sitting around a poker table with many of my dead idols. These fictional situations give me an internal drive to write a fictional story. I thought of the lights shining through the leaves for an interesting enthusiasm for description, and then I thought of the colors coming from the radio to produce good qualities in a story. I think it would be interesting if that were introduced into a story because I have never seen that before; different is always interesting, whether positive or negative. The thoughts that I produce in these stories will give me a really good push in the direction of writing future stories that will hopefully be published.
My treasures did not really match my verbal photographs like I usually like them to do, but it was an entirely different theme that I wanted to incorporate into this list. I looked for my famous texts, and writers of texts, who have the most interesting quotes about music. When I have a stressful week, like the last one, I am in a psychological overdrive, which pushes my mind to go into a creative spin. All the quotes are incorporating some aspect of music, whether it is about themselves as fellow musicians or others. The ones I found most interesting were the quotes by Plato and Mozart. Mozart explained music in perfect form by declaring that music should never “cease to be music.” It just makes me think of all the music “snobs” out there, who just judge music. Music should be listened to as an art form and is never meant to offend the ear, but rather to introduce the ear to a new sound. One should be thankful for listening to music and take in every note and melodic wonder. Sappho talks of the beauty in enjoying life and to sing what you feel, giving your grace to the world.

The '10' List 8

10 Verbal Photographs

1. I had a dream that when I was hiccupping, I was slowly losing brain cells; it was a frightening experience. Every hiccup that I let loose I slowly decrease in intelligence both aesthetically and physically.
2. Imagine a world where there was no soda or cigarettes; how would the world stay alive? While I sit, bored, at work watching the tedious people move at a snails pace to a vending machine and then having a sudden burst of twenty minute energy, it is quite peculiar, yet interesting how that works.
3. Radiohead sings a song called Karma Police, which I believe is about some sort of ailment in peoples psyche. When I hear that song, I think of an actual imperative force that comes to give you what you deserve because I have noticed before, coincidentally, that people will sometimes prosper on what they do not deserve, where the “nice guys will finish last,” to be cliché.
4. I woke up with a mild stomachache one morning at 5 am. The sun was just beginning to rise and the weather was still on the chilly side. It produced a unique level of fog, where the air felt like tiny droplets hanging from thin strings formed from the clouds.
5. I saw a sign that read, “Keep off dunes,” but it was scribbled out to say, “Keep off dudes.” Although it is somewhat humorous, I wonder if these things offend homosexual people often, on an average basis?
6. They say being high on drugs is like being down a rabbit hole, metaphorically of course. I was wondering if you’re on drugs, do you feel claustrophobic because that is what I think being down a rabbit hole would entail in a feeling.
7. It’s astonishing to go to a concert and see everybody in tune with the show. Sometimes, you go to a concert and just see people there; just to be there, but to actual be in tune with the music is amazing. I imagine an array of color radiating off each persons ore, creating an influx of beautiful people.
8. I am going to dabble one more time in the feeling of love. I know I may be a hopeless romantic, but it’s a touchy subject on this side of the track for me. I find it outrageous what the feeling can do to your stomach. Imagine if there was an actual illness for heartbreak?
9. Some people need to watch what they say to certain people. I overheard, if you can even fathom this, a young man refer to an older woman as an “old lady” over an intercom at a Super K-Mart.
10. When I listen to country music in the present day I just vision a more wrangled version of the Jonas brothers. The music does not give off the delicate afterglow that I love so much.

10 Treasures

1. “Action is character.” -F. Scott Fitzgerald
2. “All good writing is swimming under water and holding your breath.” -F. Scott Fitzgerald
3. “All religion, my friend, is simply evolved out of fraud, fear, greed, imagination, and poetry.” -Edgar Allan Poe
4. “Children aren't coloring books. You don't get to fill them with your favorite colors.” -Khaled Hosseini
5. “I wondered if that was how forgiveness budded; not with the fanfare of epiphany, but with pain gathering its things, packing up, and slipping away unannounced in the middle of the night.” Khaled Hosseini
6. “And moreover, to succeed, the artist must possess the courageous soul . . . the brave soul. The soul that dares and defies.” -Kate Chopin
7. “He is a solitary figure who claims to have sought the truth within himself, and although his work shows familiarity with the writings of other philosophers, particularly those of Anaximander, both his unique ideas and his peculiar literary style set him apart.” -Heraclitus
8. “Mediocrity doesn't mean average intelligence, it means an average intelligence that resents and envies its betters.” -Ayn Rand
9. “it’s not the knocks in life that are important
it’s how you deal with them” -aphorsibles-abraxas
10. “none of it is real
until there is love” aphorisibles

The focus of my verbal photographs is a little more random than they usual are. I was feeling a little more sporadic this week due to a hectic schedule. What I intended to display is the notion of people and their faults. My first three quotes, Radiohead, my dream and vision, all focus on parts of the world that falter before me. Negative situations in life can lead in an increased need for Karma, if you believe in that sort of thing, which I am a firm believer. Then, the latter quotes focus on minor details that have plagued society in front of my face, such as the man using an intercom in a rude manner or the problem in which an ailment could be present through heartbreak. It really is an amazing situation to think of all the negative aspects that following individuals causing hyper extensive periods of loathing. The faults presented in my verbal photographs lead to an antidote or something to make you “feel better.” I describe the character of a person and how there actions can be positive, solving the ailments in human nature.
My treasures evolve around the same idea of leading into a new abyss, something that can make you feel better. In these treasures, what comes to mind, is that actions speak a lot louder than words, but the words can be very important in representation. These quotes again describe human action, such as Fitzgerald’s quote about action being character and to succeed an artist must possess a courageous soul. I think this can apply to any part of life. To really excel in life, on must possess a strong heart and a will to thrive on and become something wonderful. Heraclitus is a fascinating philosopher, his style really does expand from many other philosophers with his doctrine of change and valuable accordance to Logos. He talks with more reason than most philosophers, hence Logos.

Shadow Box

Steve Zwilling
03/24/10
CRTW 335- Shadox Box

There are two forms to every human and those are the body itself and the shadow, which is a hazy extension of the body. The shadow is the backdrop or the single partner to the body itself, but the shadow has a personality within itself. The shadow has two different forms to it. There is the good-natured figment and a bad natured figment.
The good shadow is the one on a summer day that stands in front of you when the sun is shining from behind you. It is the shadow that reminds you to keep your head up and that you have him with you at all times. It is the shadow that unconsciously moves with your body for better or worse. Everyone carries this shadow, whether they see it as a negative abyss or an honest helper.
Then, there is the bad shadow. This figment is the one that trails you when the sun is shining in your eyes, blinding you from what is ahead. The one pulling you back like a small scared child on a mother’s dress. This shadow brings you down and follows you into the abyss. Like the good shadow it is always with you, but you never see it. It is always at your back, mocking your every move.

Advice to my past
1. At 14, don’t take that first hit of marijuana; it will lead you in some pretty uncomfortable situations.
2. When your 16, do not go with that hunch of falling in love because it is false. She is just going to eventually break your heart.
3. Don’t put that blue slice of paper on your tongue. It will lead you down some roads and make you see some things that maybe throw you through a loop you never thought possible.
4. When your dad says to come by more often do it. Coming by only once in awhile, is not good. Do it for yourself, he is an important man in your life and he needs you; don’t ignore his existence.
5. Don’t let a woman bring you down. You will allow two women, in particular, to bring you down at very important parts of your life. You’re better than that and you will see soon.
6. Don’t plan things as much as you do, just go with the flow. It will take you places you always wanted to be and didn’t even know it.
7. When you start something always finish it. You will have a problem with that later on.
8. When you finally love that girl. Tell her everyday how much you love her. She is going to be your world so when you meet her, make sure she feels that way forms the start.
9. Ignore anything that comes in pill form. It always results in nausea.

What I want down with my body when I die

If I die, I would like for my dearest friends and family to have me cremated into an ash and placed into a vase made of gold. I would like for this gold vase to be placed in a velvet kit where it possesses a set spot in there perfect. When placed in this kit, I want to be positioned under the bed of my wife, until she passes. When she passes, she will join me. After we are both cremated, I want to be spread into a few different spots for significant reasons.
First, I want to be spread in an area in Allen Park right in front of a house that my friend used to stay at. It is on Meyer off of Southfield road. This is where I first asked my wife to take me out on a date. She accepted in all enthusiasm screaming, “Yes, yes, I will be your girlfriend! What I mean by spread is actually ground into the dirt and not just scattered. I do not want to just blow away and have our ashes spread somewhere insignificant.
Second, I want to be placed at the spot I proposed to my wife. I have not done so yet, but it will be in nature somewhere. We will have a spot in northern Michigan where I will go on one knee, look her in the eye, and propose my life to her. Then we will kiss until we feel that every emotion is expressed. It is this spot that I want the ashes ground into the dirt because that’s where I caressed my beautiful wife as she emphatically screamed “Yes-” to becoming my honored and beautiful wife.
The final place will be ‘our’ place. We will have a place that represents us as a unified personality. This place will embrace all the children we will raise, all the cities we travel, and all the love we have made. We will be grounded into this place and left for nature to experience the ultimate devotion that could both tear down a tree with it’s driving force and put it back up with it’s omnipotent strength. We will share our love together for the rest of entirety and when others pass these places they will feel the exuberance radiating from our carefully placed ashes.

10 Aphorisms

10 Aphorisms

1. A man’s love can only progress when his ego allows him too.
2. Humans focus on the overpowering of other humans for survival. Animals depend on the overpowering of other animals for survival. Are we more than animals?
3. You’re down in a rabbit hole. The U.S enters Iraq, Vietnam and Korea. Not needed. Junkies continue to shoot up. Not needed. Thief’s are released from prison and steal to celebrate. Not needed. Ignorance is not an unconscious mindset; it’s a choice.
4. On this earth with red wars, black grounds, brown grass, singed bodies, reacting bombs, and yellow cakes, there are also blue skies, green grass, beating hearts, caring lovers, and loving piece. Do we need to use the colors of the world for war?
5. The content of a man’s character tells the story of his life. The acceptance in a man’s eyes tells the world.
6. I’m nobody. Nobody is ideal. Therefore I am ideal.
7. Your future is ahead of you. So pick your head up.
8. Do you want to travel around the world? Become and astronaut.
9. Drugs alter reality. Reality brings sadness. Why not do drugs?
10. You will always get back as much as you put in.

Body Narrative

Body Narrative

I felt nervous as he stepped out onto the field. Our body convulsed with a ferocious terror as I looked at the field. His hands grasp our thighs as he hunched over the white line cutting the field in half, keeping himself from throwing up out of a nervous twitch. Finally, with a sigh of relief, he raised his head feeling the blood drop back down to our legs.
The ball is kicked off to the opposing team and we feel our heart bumping through our chest with anticipation. The other team was running in my territory, I had to capitalize on our defense, so I felt my legs surging towards the opponent carrying the ball. We laid our shoulder into the man’s chest, barreling him onto the ground. In a profound leap, our legs take our body soaring over the man like a hawk over a field of potential prey. Making my land, I feel our torso twist into an awkward shape that was not cohesive with the lower part of our body; we have landed on his leg upon our landing, twisting parts of the body, especially the leg, into flesh pretzels. Our hip snaps and I bend into a shape that would repulse a normal human being. A surge of pain shoots through me and I lay on the grass in agony.
I snapped my ligament, which left me in odd disarray. I felt like I was swinging back and forth and potentially bending any which way. We tried to run on me, it felt right when we ran a straight line, however when we turned, the story was a slightly different one. When we turned, I felt like I was going to swing into the body filled stands like I was sliced right off from the thigh. The ligament was absolutely not in tact. I swelled up like a bright red grapefruit injected with growth hormones. The skin was burning like I was smacked on the knee one too many times with a ruler.
Eventually, I was laid upon a table, surrounded by men in white with shining scalpels. At first, I was frightened, but he seemed like he knew what he was doing. I started to relax and felt nothing when a mask was put over our mouth. When I woke up, I was swollen again, stitched up from my kneecap down to the start of my patellar tendon. When people complain about having their wisdom teeth pulled, I bet they never experienced the reaction like I had; I appeared that I had three baseballs shoved, and stitched, into my knee. It was an agonizing experience, but I lived.
Now there are two of us sitting on the central part of our body’s legs. We used to share the strength of holding the body up, but that is no more. I fell short of being an equal for quite sometime, but I built myself back up. I finally became juxtaposed to the other in looks and in power. In a spurt of training, I became the stronger of the two, laughing at the other trying to build it’s way back up to my usual status. Although I know it is not a fight of whose better, it is nice to know that I worked my way back up after such an agonizing defeat. It is just friendly competition between two things that are alike.

Color Associations

The Color Associations

The first colored that I possess is a dark orange; it almost gives me a happy, yet melancholic feeling. It reminds me of a pumpkin in the eerie depths of Halloween night, but I can see the kids running around happy. It brings to mind a happier time in my life when I was a little kid. Essentially, this dark orange symbolizes childhood at it’s best. Black, orange, and green, all in dark shades, gleam like strobe lights on a chilly autumn street when kids dress in their best costumes waiting for their tasty treats in their knapsack. As the walk up and down the pathway to the door, the jack o lanterns look at the children like melancholy orange head with patterns carver into their heads.

The second color that I encounter is a pale yellow. The yellow reminds me of a truly depressing time in my life. When I was young a friend of the family, nicest man in the world, would give you the shirt of his back in the depths of winter, had succumbed to the dark enforcement of alcoholisms grasp. What happens to alcoholics when they begin to really suffer from kidney or liver damage begins to develop a yellow pigment in their skin. The yellow pigment is caused from cirrhosis of the liver, which was what he was suffering from. He still needed that drink to get him through the day. He drank himself right into the hospital and later died from complications with his red blood cells. The color symbolizes dependency for me; when I looked into his eyes all I saw with the utter regret of his life choices and the yellow tint for which is punishing his body for his mistakes.

The third color I possess is a baby blue, which looks a lot like a robins egg shade. This certain color reminds me of love. Normal people relate a red or a pink with the love because that is the societal norm, but I think baby blue is more relevant for my liking. When I was 16 years old I met my first girlfriend, who I fell madly in love with. It was young, puppy love and it was great. It went on to long and we later broke up, but I was wearing a baby blue shirt when I first met her. It was her favorite shirt for the duration of our 3-year relationship. When we first met we were together all the time. Just hanging out everyday, excited to be with each other. I would randomly wear the shirt for her and she loved it. It put her in a good mood. It was really enticing that I had that power. It did not last, but I still have the shirt. The color of the shirt brings back, not only my first love, but many lessons, which I have developed in life to do with, love, behavioral psyche, and women.

The last color I have is a rosy pink. The color reminds me of my childhood yet again, but not my childhood exactly, more an older woman that used to live next door to me. Her name was Rose and she was the most cheerful and unrelenting person to ever walk this earth. She had a bite to her that would scare the skin of a lion, but she also was more loving than a mother to a newborn baby. She would protect me from neighborhood bullies who used to beat on me because I was small. She was well into her 70’s, coming out of the house picking me up off the ground and brushing me off. I looked up to ever little nook and cranny of her. She was impressive, obedient, caring, and hopeful to spread happiness to anybody that she spread her motherly wings over.
